Transparent Film Dressings

Transparent film dressings are thin, flexible, waterproof yet breathable sheets of adhesive polyurethane that create a protective barrier over the skin. Because they are see-through, they let you monitor a wound or insertion site without removing the dressing. They are ideal for superficial wounds with little to no exudate, such as minor abrasions, blisters, skin tears, closed surgical incisions, and shallow pressure areas. They are also widely used to secure and protect IV catheters, PICC lines, and central line sites, and to shield fragile or at-risk skin from friction and moisture.

When choosing a transparent film dressing, select a size that extends at least an inch beyond the wound or device onto clean, dry, intact skin so the adhesive seals well. Apply to a hairless area when possible, smooth from the center outward to prevent wrinkling, and avoid stretching the film, which can pull on the skin. The semi-permeable design allows oxygen and moisture vapor to pass through while keeping out water and bacteria, supporting a moist healing environment and letting you shower with confidence. Films offer no absorbency, so pair them with an absorbent primary dressing for wounds that produce drainage, and change them per your clinician's guidance or if the seal loosens.
